The Story of Everything and the Kitchen Sink - A Thread the radio show, the podcast - Since 2011
That was and is never about getting a radio career. it was and IS still about the love of music, and representing women in music podcasts
back in 2011 I found a UK live streaming radio show and I loved the vibe. I was invited to do a show. and I was scared shitless. Where I grew up many girls loved music because it's what their boyfriends liked. And music was and still IS very much a boys club (FACTS)
In 2012 I was offered a radio spot at another radio station because they loved my sass and messy of genres on my show. (I was going to school fulltime and raising two children so again it was a hobby, because I love music)
2013 I could have done the most epic interview with a well known Italian band for the radio show (remember I don't get paid to do radio) I had to turn it down as I was preparing for my workshop for a national conference that would help the career that I was getting paid for
I did manage to arrange a phone interview but that wasn't could enough so my shows slowly just stopped happening on that radio show. My show that I worked so hard for was going to end because I wasn't going to risk my career for a none paid gig. Let that sink in...
2014 - I learned to code so I could put my own podcast up. Sure I could have paid a site to do it. But when you are raising 2 kids and paying for you to go back to school in Toronto no less. money is tight
2014 - I almost lost my eldest son
him in ICU and the court case wrecked me. Remember that my radio show was a non paid gig. Mom of two, a career and going to university. Still the music scene could care less about what I did
2016 - I got into it with another website that hosted my reviews, my rants and my podcast because they had a writer that glamourized GG Alin and would not ask him to write a disclaimer. Freedom of speech blah blah
There were other music podcasts, TONS of writers everyone stayed quiet. I burned a shit load of bridges with men who support racists or treat women like shit and I do not make apologies for it. this is perhaps why many other "indie" music sites run by men quietly support my show
In 2018, I killed my website, my iTunes, because working a full time job, being a mom who is going to university and with relapse multiple sclerosis - I continually felt that I was banging my head against the wall trying to support bands and indie labels
I have been on a very well known punk podcast that has been around for more than 20 years. I had them on my show 3 times. But they can't bother to support an indie girl like me. I ruffle too many male egos and their audience is predominately male.
I can't do a show once a month anymore. My career, my kids, my partner, my education and my health is a shit load to juggle. So I felt like a failure because I just couldn't keep up with the boys and their ability to pound out content.
2019- I missed doing my show so much because really there aren't many shows like mine out there. While inspired by The Strombo show - I would never be that b/c it's not a career for me. It's hard to come to terms to put out content I can, when I can and not feel like a failure
2020 -because I am a little more financially stable - I started giving out bandcamp gift cards monthly to encourage buying music. I searched out to find a BIPOC music reviewer for a PAID gig.
2021 -I am excited that @stichomancery will be the music reviewer and she/they are about ALL genres. And I LOVE that. I have never been a fan of music gate keepers and music snobs. And shit is gonna shake up for 2021 (its not about quantity, its' about quality)
Music/Podcasting/ Reviews are still male dominated. women feel that they cannot do it all. it's a true & real stigma for women in podcasting if they a have relationship/ family/career. Men podcasters supporting women enough this is part of the problem

Indie sites - I challenge you to take your precious craft beer money and PAY for a BIPOC or woman to write/ do a show on your site
Representation matters so step the fuck up
