Nope, this just gives an incentive for others like him to try to do the same thing. https://twitter.com/sfmnemonic/status/1352806798030499841
We did this after the Civil War. We got Reconstruction. At some point confronting white supremacy has to actually happen at the Federal level. Or we're going to see the Confederate flag waving in the White House next time.
And yes, I read the article. The argument to issue a preemptive pardon is really an argument to let the leaders off the hook & leave the people who don't have the access to power to pay for what happened. Accountability at every level is the only way to stop this pattern.
A fun American history fact? And by fun I mean awful, at no point has America actually punished racist violence in a meaningful way. Whether we're talking the Red Summer, Black Wall Street, the mass theft of Japanese farms during internment, the argument is always "to heal"
Festering wounds don't heal when you ignore them. And I will be blunt, hate is America's disease. Not addressing that has regularly led to violence on a mass scale. Qanon & so on didn't create a cult. They took advantage of one that already exists. It's the movement hate built
So pardoning this leader to "heal" is really just kicking the can down the road another 5 to 50 years. But that whole article could have been about the Confederacy, post WWII attacks on Black vets, the attacks on the Civil Rights Movement leaders...we have literally heard it
It never works out. The healing never comes. All that happens is we do it again. And again. It functions like Pennywise, returning to kill on a schedule only it understands while the adults pretend that ignoring it will stop the problem. We could stop feeding it now.
