The Philippines allowed China to help them build and operate their power grid. Now China is in full control, and can kill power to the entire country whenever they want. Imagine governing a country with that hanging over your head. No wonder Duterte suddenly went anti-U.S. https://twitter.com/SecretsBedard/status/1352732817474674689
The power grid isn't the only thing China has magnanimously done for the Philippines. They've remodeled or built many of the international airports there. Now they're building more airports there, even if many in the Philippines are worried about it. https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Engineering-Construction/China-group-s-10bn-Philippines-airport-bid-sows-alarm
China is doing similar all over the world. Many countries are now indebted to China because they graciously "gave" them aid in the form of infrastructure—power, water, transportation, etc. So in exchange for China-built quality infrastructure, they are now beholden to China.
And China doesn't have to say a word of warning to get them to cooperate. It's simply a known quantity: go against China and lose your power, water, transportation, etc. Whatever it was China so graciously helped them with and maintains for them.
And they are trying to do that to the United States. Whether or not they succeed depends on whether we are led by someone who will stand up to them or who will accept their "friendship and aid" in exchange for favors like all those other countries have.
Good thing we have a president who is completely and totally free of any potentially harmful business ventures with China, right?
After all, they got the results they wanted.
Oh, and a recent update relevant to this thread: https://twitter.com/starsandstripes/status/1352862376559689729
And yet another recent update. Now that Biden is in office and there's no one to oppose them, China is becoming bolder. We'll see them seize the Spratly Islands within Biden's term in office, and we won't do anything about it. https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/1353065222911614983
