My 101 year old grandmother got vaccinated today. She fled the Nazis as a college student, still reads novels in four languages, paid for my education, drinks a ton of coffee, hates pepper, and adores almond croissants. I’m weeping.
Here is my Oma on her immigrant identification card in 1939, and here she is hanging out with my son on her 100th birthday.
She's amazing. After she was widowed around the age of 70, she got back together with her high school boyfriend who she had left behind in the Netherlands when she managed to get out. They spent another couple of decades together, splitting time between California and The Hague.
Just found the photo of us from ten years ago when I went to visit her and her boyfriend, Wim, in the Hague. We are standing in front of the house where she grew up.
I'll call her later and explain that she's going viral and hope this won't weird her out. Since she doesn't have a soundcloud, I'll add that her car (she only stopped driving a few years ago) was covered with stickers for Medicare for All, Planned Parenthood, etc.
