Trump thought he could get Judges whom he appointed to do his bidding. They didn't. He thought he could get Republicans in swing states to bail him out. They didn't. He thought Department of Justice will help him. It didn't. He thought his VP, Pence, will come through. He didn't.
A functioning democracy requires people who swore by the Constitution to stand by their oath. It requires people to distinguish between loyalty to the country and loyalty to a party. It requires a sense of right and wrong. But most of all, it requires a modicum of courage.
