Hi Twitter gang. Here’s a thread debunking the biggest myths surrounding President Biden’s stutter along with stuttering in general. Made by me, your resident very online girl who stutters.
“But no one ever mentioned it before this election!”
Wrong! Here's an interview clip of him talking about in 1994. https://www.c-span.org/video/?c4925038/user-clip-biden-stuttering-1994

“But he didn’t stutter before this election/in this speech/in that speech!”
Stuttering fluctuates. Some days I stutter on almost every syllable, some days I can speak 100% fluidly. Not to mention people with childhood stutters often have it go away and return later in life.

“That’s not a stutter, he’s switching and jumbling words!”
Wrong! People who stutter often find themselves switching words mid-sentence to avoid stuttering, which can lead to speech that feels choppy, jumbled, or slurred.

“That’s not a stutter, he freezes up and forgets what he's saying!”
Wrong! ‘Blocking’ is a form of stuttering that happens when a person who stutters is struggling to make any sound come out at all, which makes them appear to be freezing up or stuck.

“Cool then, it’s great that he overcame his stutter.”
Please stop using the words overcome and overcame in this way. People who stutter overcome social stigma and ableist prejudices, not the completely a-okay way that we talk.

People who stutter don’t have to speak fluidly to be successful. I do Model UN, student gov, and more stuttering my face off and couldn’t be happier.
That’s all I can think of, but if y'all have more questions I’m down to answer them! I'm also a writer and have experience appearing in televised press interviews if that’s anything to anyone. Press members whom I adore, please include us when you talk about us.

Y’all.
The attention this thread got made my week. And I’ve loved hearing from other people who stutter (I love us!). Biden’s campaign meant a lot to me as a politically aspiring person who stutters and I’m grateful for the attention stuttering has gotten because of him.

If there’s ANYTHING I can do for y’all I’m down. Zooming with your kiddos who stutter, talking to classes, helping with class projects, anything. With all the attention stuttering gets now the sky is the limit in regards to pushing for acceptance and education. Email in my bio!
