i feel like this is going to be rambling so bear w me but i just heard about a guy in our bn who is known for watching women while they sleep and stealing their panties out of the drier and it really fucking bothers me, but what bothers me the most might not be what u think 1/
what bothers me is that he’s KNOWN FOR IT. i found out abt it bc jokes are being made in a group chat about the horny police catching him. so other male Marines in bn KNOW that this guy is exhibiting predatory behavior towards other members of the bn. 2/
they know, and they’re making jokes about it. and when someone made a joke about it to his face, he laughed and shrugged like “ha ha whaddaya gonna do, boys will be boys!!”
then we go and we watch step up training where we’re taught how to intervene. 3/

GRAPHIC videos of all the moments other Marines could have intervened and prevented sexual violence against another member of the team. and they laugh there too. but when you put them on the spot THEY don’t know ANY predators!!!! none of THEIR friends!!! 4/
the panty thief hasn’t harmed anyone physically yet that i know of. but when he does (and he probably will) the time for intervention will have been...now. now, while everyone is joking. now when everyone is like “weeeellllll it was JUST a rumor, it’s not my business!!” 5/
women have a hard time reporting because when you do report AND ESPECIALLY when people might view it as a prank, or harmless (like they will if his panty stealing gets reported) then you’re ostracized. sharp becomes a verb and you become “dangerous” bc you “can’t take a joke!” 6/
all your brothers, the ones who knew, the ones who made jokes about it, after u report? after it’s not funny anymore? they’re nowhere to be found. oh, they say they’d beat the shit out of any guy who harms u, but that’s not true. they couldn’t even stand up to a panty thief /end
