Going to type this once, because people keep showing up in my timeline insisting otherwise: the end of the fairness doctrine DID NOT bring us Fox News. The fairness doctrine never would have applied to Fox News because it's on cable, not broadcast.
The fairness doctrine *only* applied to broadcasts over limited public spectrum, which was given out by the gov't with a conditional license (part of that license was about public interest). That does not and CANNOT apply to cable/internet, which is not scarce, public spectrum.
Also, the fairness doctrine was not as great as you think it was. It diminished interest in reporting on lots of topics -- like racism, civil rights, CIA coups, etc....
Also, the fairness doctrine, incorrectly, assumes there are two sides to every story. If it was used the way people want, every time CNN showed a Biden speech, they'd have to show an equal amount of time of Trump responding. Do we need that? God I hope not.
So, please, before you jump in with some nonsense about Fox News and the fairness doctrine, do some research.
