The "bomb" was extremely realistic looking, complete with lights and wires. The gun was a very convincing replica. Those familiar with the case described the garda's actions as a masterclass in de-escalation. 2/6
As the Armed Support Unit waited out the room, the negotiator talked to Dunican about his own family and how he wants to get home to them. He said how he understood how Dunican felt but told him he won’t help himself or anyone else by hurting people. 3/6
The Garda told him the last thing anyone wants is for Dunican to be shot. As far as the garda knew, the suspect could have detonated the "bomb" at any stage, killing him and everyone else in the room. 4/6
The Garda saved Dunican's life when it would have been a lot less risky (and justifiable) to have the ASU use force, including probably lethal force. 5/6
The Scott medal is awarded to gardaí who show "personal bravery, performed intelligently in the execution of duty at imminent risk to the life of the doer, and armed with full previous knowledge of the risk involved". I hope/presume this garda is on the shortlist.
