Let’s face it. There is no leadership in American college sports. Power is purposely diffuse. This has meant decision-making without intentionality; virtue-signaling without a real moral code. I would place them all—NCAA, conferences, schools—on probation. https://www.si.com/college/2021/01/20/ncaa-athlete-rights-compensation-congress-nil
If current leadership in college sports (including university leadership) actually cared about building something better—a more optimal, more just athletics system that acknowledges history, complexity *and* reality—they would have gotten to work long ago. Or at least last March
But by not acting, those in charge have proven they have no interest—and therefore should lose the right—to be part of the project to re-imagine college sports. They lost their chance after having literally decades to work on better models
NCAA leaders nervously observed as the AAU lost its stranglehold on the Olympic Movement in the United States in the 1970s. There are always lessons in history...
And while (of course) not a perfect institution, at least the IOC under Juan Antonio Samaranch understood that transforming the Olympic Games into a commercialized sports entertainment behemoth meant ending the amateurism charade & allowing athletes 2 monetize their notoriety too
