Lockdown is tough, but the one thing of which I am certain is that many millions are living in tougher circumstances than I am. Those who can manage have a duty - no other word - to do so and to help those who can’t. 1./
Before demanding that lockdown be relaxed, bear in mind what was said today about the alarming preliminary data about the variants - their transmissibility and (possibly) their impact upon mortality rates. Ask what is the socially responsible path to take. 2/
If you still think ministers are acting improperly by warning that the lockdown longer than hoped, try to talk to someone on the frontline. An ICU doctor or nurse who has worked 36 hours straight in a hellscape of death. A care home worker. 3/
Ask them whether they are more fearful of the virus or the threat to our ancestral liberties. Nobody wants to be less free. Nobody is trying to make us less free indefinitely. Understand the nature of national emergency and its many unknowns 4/
This is not an authoritarian conspiracy. It’s a crisis that’s already claimed nearly 100,000 lives (or, depending on how you count, has already passed that dreadful milestone). Know your true enemy. Take its measure. Hang on in there and help those who can’t.
