As I get older, watching 100s of @NHL and other hockey games a year... do you know what stands out to me about broadcast coverage most?

How little tactical analysis there is compared to almost any other sport.

When you sit back and think about it it is crazy... #NHL
I dont mean "they need to get the puck deep there".
Or "they have to find a way past the NZ trap".

But actual break-downs of forechecking schemes, NZ schemes, blue-line approaches.

@NHL hockey and tactics are not THAT complex compared to other sports. #NHL
We have a GLUT of recently retired @NHL players who have played hockey since they could walk.

Surely they ALL know the differences between say a 2-1-2 and a 2-3 or a 1-3-1.

And the flaws in each. And what needs to be done to execute well with them? #NHL
Even in @NHL intermissions when have time... very rarely is there a breakdown of a teams scheme, why it is working or not working etc.

Or why in a specific situation it fell apart and dominoes led to a goal against.

This is just PAR FOR THE COURSE in so many other sports. #NHL
I am not talking nerding out.
Or being suuuuuper in depth.
Or patronising audience.

But enlightening @NHL audiences as to how teams play in the way they do, and why, and what it needs to work.

Look at @NFL and someone like Tony Romo.

Engages audience and educates as well. #NHL
The only reasons I can think that they dont are:

@nhl broadcasts as a whole think their audiences:

wont be able to understand it.
wont be interested in it.

Which I think are bizarre assumptions. #NHL
A lot of fans of @NHL are either say @NFL or Soccer fans as well. or grew up playing hockey!

And in those other broadcasts they are used to such analysis.

+if they played they KNOW basics already, and will likely enjoy having something pointed out they might have missed. #NHL
I have a feeling that it will come soon.
But it should already BE a regular occurrence.
It does not need to be every intermission.

And my guess is...

the 1st ex- @NHL player to REALLY do this on a regular basis will end up @hockeynight or something in VERY short order. #NHL
They will be @NHL version of Tony Romo. And then others will follow suite.

Fans will understand game better, and have a better product to watch.

It just baffles me as to why it has not already happened. #NHL
