I'm helping one of my best friends getting started with coding.

Here's some advice I shared with her for the beginning of her coding journey, that I wish I had when I started
(based on mistakes I made / am still making 🙈)

Also curious to have yours, please share 🙏

🧵 Thread
1. 🙅 Don't compare yourself to others

It might seem more simple to others BUT:

- you’re not in their heads and don't see their struggle if they don't share with you
- you don't know when they started
- some things might be easy for you but difficult for others and vice-versa
2. 👯 Make sure to surround yourself with supportive people

It's essential to learn with people who encourage you to ask questions, don’t patronize you and help you grow!
I had to distance myself from people when I felt their presence was damaging my self-confidence and learning
3. 🙋 Put your ego aside and ask for help

Don’t stay stuck, it’s not worth it. The more you’re stuck on a problem, the more room it leaves for your negative thoughts and your fear of not being able to do it.

People are happy to help too, it’s a win-win situation!
4. 💞 Be kind to yourself

Learning to code is freaking hard. It’s a new world, new concepts, new languages…

Remember that next time you think you’re stupid for not understanding X or Y, ok?
5. ⏳ Trust your future self and resources

Accept that you can't understand everything and keep moving forward. The dots will connect at some point.

Trust the process!
6. 📈 Accept that your learning curve isn’t linear and exponential

Sometimes you’ll reach new levels continuously.

But then for weeks or months you’ll feel like you don’t make progress… until, TADA 🥳, you’ve reached a new level of knowledge without doing anything particular!
7. 🔁 Repeat all over

If all of this is true for junior devs… it still is as we progress in our career.

The challenges and expectations will be different, but there will still be more experienced people or new technologies!
What's missing for you? What is the advice you give to people starting their coding journey? 🤓
