1/ I have been a teacher going on twenty-one years. We are going through some things as a country, but this morning I came across a post that really incensed me.

Title IX protections in schools have been around since 1972.
2/ As a teacher, I have been to multiple training regarding the laws protecting students from discrimination. Title IX sets up the rules and laws regarding discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation.
3/ It includes, amongst other protections, regulations about inclusion in sports teams and extra-curricular activities. In 2014, our federal government stated that transgendered students should be included under those protections explicitly.
4/ Obama wrote them into the law in 2016, so that they could no longer just be implied.

Betsy DeVos removed protections for transgendered children, and yesterday, Joe Biden put them back.
5/ Now, we are going through some things as a country. Vast amounts of misinformation that fuel our darkest instincts have been running rampant. Some of this information is incredibly hurtful, but worse, physically harmful rhetoric.
6/ Facts:

Transgender people do not choose to be transgender. In fact, it is a group that is not only misunderstood, violence against this group is prevalent. Bullying of transgendered young people leaves lifelong scars and sometimes leads to suicide.
7/ Transgendered students do not become trans in order to dominate in sports.

They are not “taking away” opportunities from girls any more than the desegregation
of race in sports took away opportunities from white people.
8/ Playing with transgendered students isn’t any more dangerous than playing with other children, and if we can allow girls into predominantly boy football teams, then we can allow transgender students to be on teams where they are comfortable.
9/ Your personal comfort does not usurp other people’s rights. THAT is why we have a Bill of Rights.
