Research isn't a nice, linear process. It's like climbing a tree on a moonless light, trying to reach the top. You have a general idea which direction you are headed, but you find yourself struggling along boughs and branches, swaying back and forth in the wind. /1
I'm not a great climber by any means. I've learned as I go, and I've been fortunate not to get injured when I fall down a few branches. I hold on for a few minutes, wait for the shaking to stop, clean off my hands and try climbing up a different branch. /2
I'll be honest, a lot of the time it can be lonely and frustrating - sometimes I'll have nothing to show for it apart from a directory full of scripts and plots and not much else. When it happens a few times in a row, I climb back down, go for a walk and try another tree. /3
But eventually I can't help myself - I'll be back, try climbing up again. I've also got a couple of videos I keep rewatching, they keep inspiring me to try again. One is "Cassini Mission" by Chris Abbas - raw images of Saturn set to Nine Inch Nails: https://vimeo.com/24410924 /4
And the other is the far more fanciful (but utterly beautiful) "Wanderers" by Eric Wernquist: https://vimeo.com/108650530
Anyway. If you've had a rough week for whatever reason, it's perfectly fine to go watch or listen to something you love and makes you happy! Cheers :) /fin
