The Life Of Pablo, by Kanye West.
(album breakdown):
today i’m going to be breaking down my personal favourite kanye album of all time. kanye is one of my favourite artists so i was anticipating this thread. the best way to describe TLOP is that it’s nothing but great music. that’s why the use of so many different sounds is great.
Ultralight Beam:
this is a godly intro. quite literally, as this is one of the more gospel type tracks on the record. he has a church choir implemented in the song as well as Kelly Price, Pastor Kirk Franklin and Chance The Rapper. it’s a song of faith and glory.
Father Stretch My Hands Pt.1:
an iconic track. i remember the first time i heard the drop and it was truly magical. kid cudi’s presence on the track was special and the moment captured by this picture right here is a historical moment in music, if you ask me. great energy.
Pt. 2:
the second part of FSMH is a lot more personal, however it samples desiigner’s “panda”. he talks about problems he has calling his wife and his mother’s death. as well as a car accident he had in 2002. it then abruptly changes to some gospel for a bit which is interesting.

Famous:
the most controversial song on the album. the music video too, which is based on Sleep, a painting made by Vincent Desidero in 2008. while absolutely shocking at first, the purpose is to show that all celebrities are in the same box, from all ranges.(1)
as opposed to music video, the actual song sees kanye claiming to have been responsible for taylor swift’s fame. she was not happy about it.
but musically i think this is the best introduction to kanye. it shows him as a progressive musician, not just a rapper; this is why.(2)
as a rapper, kanye rightfully shows himself to be bragging about fame over a high-quality beat.
then the song becomes more smooth with rihanna’s incredible vocal performance, which was ye’s call.
he then uses the Sister Nancy sample, and that portion is just perfect.
i love it.
Feedback:
this is just kanye flexing about his come up and crazy success, artistically and commercially. he refers to pablo escobar which is a call to the title of this album. the line “name one genius that ain’t crazy” is so captivating because i never looked at it like that.
Highlights:
this is one of the many songs of kanye’s where it has “lights” in the name of it. ye flaunts his 21 grammy wins and with the company of young thug, he tells everyone that he’s back and ready to make more highlights. i like the experimental use of autotune here.
Freestyle 4:
this song seems out of control. which is a reflection of his mental state during the track. he’s very impatient and wants everything to be done for him right now. he describes his drug use and it seems like it’s intoxicated him mentally. desiigner appears at the end.
I Love Kanye:
this is a huge 180 from the last track. it’s just a funny acapella and he raps in third person, from the perspective of the public to show how he thinks he’s perceived by media and everybody that knows who he is.
Waves:
Kanye joins forces with Chris Brown and Akon on this one. sonically this is one of the best songs on the record, the production is A1. the message is about relationships with those you love. waves go up and down but they’re always there, forever. just like a relationship.
FML:
this track is quite personal with an appearance from the weeknd. it’s about kanye’s struggles of coping with the people who want to see him fail in life. however he’s aware that he is the only person that could make that happen. section 25 is sampled and it sounds amazing.
Real Friends:
Kanye is accompanied by Ty Dolla $ign’s voice on this track where he reflects on his relationships with his family and friends, and why he hasn’t been able to keep up with them because of who he is and what he does. he’s realised what he’s doing wrong.
Wolves:
this track shows kanye at a very vulnerable state mentally, and as sia says, “lost and beat up”. he comforts his wife telling her not to worry about any mistakes she may have made that she regrets, as kanye himself is also guilty of messing up stuff that cannot be undone.
Frank’s Track:
this was originally the outro to Wolves but Kanye infamously altered this album and this soon became its own song. almost like an interlude. he sings as if it’s from the perspective of a wolf. making references to caves and flesh. while short, it’s introspective.
30 Hours:
sampling Arthur Russell’s “Answers Me”, this storytelling track sees kanye talking about a past relationship with an ex-girlfriend of his from the perspective of currently being married to another woman, Kim Kardashian. it feels like a conversation on a long drive.
No More Parties In LA:
this is one of my favourite collaborations of all time. the way they go head to head, the chemistry is absolutely electric. people would have said before that kendrick is lyrically much better than kanye. however ye does great and some would say better.(1)
both of them rap about the dodgy lifestyle as a superstar in Los Angeles and how they both want to distance themselves from that sort of environment. they both share their own fascinating stories about crazy experiences in LA and i think it’s mad how some of this stuff occurs.(2)
Facts:
kanye boasts about his yeezy shoe line under adidas against their competitor nike, who he claims would be nothing without drake. this track is a bop and he’s on his ignorant flow here. it’s a great listen and an underrated track on this record.
Fade:
this is a call out to a distant lover of kanye, who he can tell that their love for him is fading. the music video is crazy as well because Teyana Taylor recorded it soon after she gave birth, which is a powerful statement within itself when you think about it.
Saint Pablo:
most people consider this to be one of ye’s best songs. the perfect way to end it. i love the way kanye is able to lash out on his insecurities in such a lyrical way. he knows he’s vulnerable but on record he seems in control of what he’s doing. beautiful track.
that is the end. phew. that is my longest thread yet, i wanted to perfect it and i think i have. i didn’t include Low Lights and Siiiiiiiiilver Surffffeeeeer Intermission because i’m limited to how much i can write, and they didn’t really feel like songs to analyse.
follow for more! i make threads quite often and i was waiting for the time i had to make a kanye one, because i’m a huge fan. thank you for reading if you have.
