What is the Hyde Amendment and why does NCJW want it gone? A thread: The Hyde Amendment is a budget rider, which means it gets tacked onto the Congressional budget every single year since its introduction in 1977. Hyde prevents the use of Federal tax dollars to cover abortion

What does this mean? Basically, anyone who uses Medicaid, Medicare, anyone who works in the Federal government, or anyone who serves in the military cannot use their insurance to cover the (often very expensive costs) of an abortion.

Unfortunately, this amendment disproportionately affects those who are working to make ends meet and BIPOC individuals. Without the ability to use Medicare or other insurance on the costs of the procedure, folks are forced to pay out of pocket--anywhere from $300-$10,000

By nature, Hyde is a discriminatory amendment. It doesn't reduce the number of abortions, nor does it save the taxpayers money. But it does show that the Federal gov is willing to create a double standard when it comes to health care: those who can afford abortion can have it.

Ending Hyde is ending racial discrimination. It's ending economic discrimination. And it's ending gender discrimination. At NCJW, we know that #AbortionAccess4All must include ending Hyde.
