[rubs hands together excitedly] i know a lot of people aren't actually aware of the various steps that go into 3d animation, so let's talk about the 3d production pipeline and, more specifically, lighting! -❄️ https://twitter.com/TinyTANofficial/status/1352544883517448194
here is an overview of the 3d production pipeline. each step involves a whole team of artists. lighting falls at the end of production, right before post-production/editing. it's the last step of the actual 3d work. (and, personally, my favorite!) -❄️
i am a 3d lighting artist. when people ask me what exactly it is that i do, i like to show them this thread. lighting takes the 3d models/textures/animation given to them and brings them to life—adds emotion through color & dimension, light & shadow. -❄️ https://twitter.com/OtherDanOBrien/status/1210741711313354752?s=20
the lighting process starts with color keys—taking the director's vision, the existing storyboards, and mapping out what colors/moods you want for each shot. this will usually be done by the look development dept, who solidify the look of the film. -❄️ https://twitter.com/TinyTANofficial/status/1352544784066473988?s=20
within the 3d program, lighting artists will use various types of lights in combination to achieve the look they are aiming for. there is a LOT lighters have to keep in mind—colors, the interaction of light with diff materials, how hard or soft shadows are, saturation... -❄️
as a student, it takes me a few weeks to finalize lighting for one 3-5 second shot. they are def more efficient, but even with a team of about 50 people, it likely takes @TinyTANofficial many months to create each of the lovely few minute short films they upload for us. -❄️
let me know if you guys would be interested in hearing more about 3d animation things from gvfxarmy! i might want to gush over the lighting in the recent short for a bit. thanks for listening to me nerd out about the tinytan films for a bit hehe :,) -❄️
