Big shout out to @saxonbullock who copy edited Call of the Bone Ships and The Bone Ship's Wake and just _got_ it. I have had to think so hard, in a good way, and have a blinding headache and, as we all know, copy editors wear writer's headaches like medals.
Joking aside, a good copy editor is one of the unsung heroes that strengthens the backbone of a book in ways you as a reader never see.
If a book is building a house then your editor (the brilliant @Jenni_Hill in my case) is like the architect of your ideas who makes sure it looks great and will work. The copy editor is the person who comes in and makes sure it actually stays standing up.
Writers are the ones going 'BUT I WANT MY HOUSE TO HOVER' while everyone looks on and shakes their head.
Editors: You might want to put a steel in this wall as it's supporting a lot of weight and if it goes everything will come down.

Writers: I'll put another coat of paint on it.
