A sad day indeed, when a titan of baseball, a fighter for civil rights, and a genuinely great man dies. Goodbye, Henry "Hank" Aaron. You bent the arc of history and inspired so many. He always carried that hammer as one of the greatest right-handed hitters of all time. 1/3
When I think about race and baseball, I always think of Jackie, but I also think about what Hank endured, day in and day out, from racists, as he pursued Babe Ruth's record. He said, "I don't want them to forget about the Babe. I just want them to remember me." 2/3
One more thing: what always made me smile the most about Hank was right after he crossed the plate after hitting the record-breaking 715th home run, the first person there was his mother, who gave him one of the biggest hugs you've ever seen. Goodbye, Hank. Thank you. 3/3
