Hey y'all! Let's discuss some abortion myths & facts this Roe Anniversary! Unfortunately, much of abortion research is defined by heteronormative terms. Keep in mind that trans & nonbinary folks have abortions too. URGE believes that abortion care should be affirming of all.
MYTH OR FACT? Most people regret their abortions.
This is MYTH! A peer reviewed study has indicated that 99% of women feel no regret in their decision to get an abortion. Additionally, in 2008, the American Psychological Associated release a report stating that no scientific evidence linked abortion to mental distress.
MYTH OR FACT? Having an abortion may increase your risk for breast cancer.
This one is also a MYTH! Some states require ppl to undergo counseling before an abortion. They're often told lies- this being one of them. Luckily, the American Cancer Society, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have all refuted this claim.
MYTH OR FACT? Self-managed abortion is safe.
This is a FACT. Self -managed abortion (SMA) is both safe and effective! URGE believes in the decriminalization of SMA to ensure that every pregnant person has the option to terminate their pregnancy in the comfort of their home.
MYTH OR FACT? Abortions are/should be rare.
MYTH! Many people have abortions and none of them should be stereotyped or stigmatized for doing so! Between 26-41% of all pregnancies end in abortion. Abortion is common and should be normalized!
MYTH OR FACT? If abortion care is accessible, people will use abortion as birth control.
MYTH. Generally, accessing contraception is much easier and more affordable than accessing abortion is. There is no evidence showing that people use abortion as a primary method of birth control, or that they want to undergo an unwanted pregnancy.
MYTH OR FACT? Most people who have an abortion used contraceptives the month they got pregnant.
This is a FACT! In 2014, Guttmacher Institute found that 51% of abortion patients reported using a contraceptive method the same month they became pregnant.
MYTH OR FACT? People who have abortions are harmed psychologically, even if they don’t regret their abortion.
MYTH: This is simply not true! While anti-choice folks have coined the term “post abortion syndrome,” there is no evidence suggesting that such a thing exists. However, the Turnaway Study recently confirmed the psychological harm that folks denied abortion care often endure.
MYTH OR FACT? You can conceive again after an abortion.
FACT: There is no evidence linking abortion to infertility or miscarriage in future pregnancies. Anecdotes supporting this claim can be attributed to the criminalization of abortion care, which prevented many folks from seeing qualified doctors.
Thanks for participating! Now, join us as we demand that the Biden-Harris Administration end the Hyde Amendment! By ending Hyde, we'll enable hundreds of thousands of women, trans men, & nonbinary people to access abortion coverage. #roe48 https://p2a.co/7dsKmWx
