From Allegri to Sarri to Pirlo

What has changed at Juventus ? A thread

In this thread I will compare Allegri’s last season (18/19) in term of results and performances/statistics to Sarri 19/20 and Pirlo 20/21.

I will first compare the raw results and we’ll get deeper after :

18/19 :
1st in Serie A
Lost in 1/4 Coppa Italia
Won the SuperCup
Lost in 1/4 UCL

19/20 :
1st in Serie A
Lost in Coppa Italia final
Lost the SuperCup
Lost in 1/8 UCL

20/21 (so far) :
5th in Serie A

Won the SuperCup
1/4 in UCL

Expected Points per game based on the chances created and shots conceded vs actual points per game (Serie A) :

18/19 : 1.86 • 2.36
19/20 : 1.87 • 2.18
20/21 : 2.08 • 1.94

Increase in expected points but decrease in actual points , why ?

PSxG+/- p90 by Juventus goalkeepers :

18/19 : +0.10
19/20 : -0.02
20/21 : +0.01

Huge overperformance in 18/19, similar in 19/20 and 20/21

Clear decrease

This was about the results, let’s see how their playstyle changed :

Average passing completion % :

18/19 : 84.2%
19/20 : 86.9%
20/21 : 87.3%

% of goalkeepers passes that were +40 yards :

18/19 : 36.6%
19/20 : 26.1%
20/21 : 16,6%

We can see that Juventus try to play from the back way more than in 18/19, they also play more safe passes which can be proven with pass %

When Sarri came to Juventus he tried to include this playstyle and Pirlo increased it this season but, there is a difference...

Long passes attempted p90 :

18/19 : 113.9
19/20 : 95.2
20/21 : 103.2

Pirlo is trying to bring back this long play style while Sarri tried to stop using it

We can see that Juventus were lucky in 18/19 and 19/20, if a goalkeeper isn’t performing or an attacker isn’t scoring a penalty it’s not in the coach’s hands.

Many people can’t see the difference, it’s not always the coach’s fault is a team winning/loosing

Many Juve fans will disagree but in my opinion, the last year of Allegri at Juve was saved by individual exploits and not actual good performances. At the end, he got sacked because of the inevitable crisis that was going to happen
