Happy Friday! Today I'm going to rant about how search behavior has changed forever for a huge demographic.

Toddlers/Kids.

And how ubiquitous "search" has paved the way for a generational shift in values and beliefs.

Here's an old article on some number of parents giving phones to kids - articlehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/04/27/look-whos-swiping-now-6-month-old-babies-are-using-smartphones-study-says/

High CTR low conversion on your display ads? Blame kids.

2/N
Getting a person's targeting is getting tougher. I remember a time where we were hyping about cross-device attribution as an industry.

The reality is account-sharing is likely growing. We're all at home sharing devices and accounts. Garbage data, garbage personalization.

3/N
Let's play "Hey Alexa/Google/Siri, turn off the lights" on Zoom to prank a co-worker. Are these commands/actions yours or your family's?

And just like that, search and action is being blurred as the trend of IOT/Smart Things turn bots into butlers.

Your kids are spoiled.

4/N
Bored? Siri tell me a joke. Curious about something? Find me videos on a particular topic.

Time and time again my kids search for information in ways that are dramatically different from the parents who grew up with dial-up, keyboard typing classes, and old books.

5/N
My kids do not have the filter to know right from wrong, fact from fiction.

I've been dunked on by my kids. You know that "why?" phase kids have? Ever get stumped at some point in the chain?

My I don't know was met with "Dad you should Google it."

....

God help me.

6/N
Technology has somehow become the arbiter of truth for kids who don't know any better, and fortunately if you're following me you're probably there to catch that.

What if you're not there? What if they fall into a Qanon sinkhole of doom?

Oh wait they're kids.

7/N
I want what's best for my children.

It's a constant battle between teaching them how to make good choices and letting them learn from failure.

Ya' know what's funny? My parents likely went through similar concerns when I got a phone/computer as a teen.

Timelines shift.

10/N
I know times are hard, but I want to tell you you're not alone in planning exhaustion.

Check out https://www.commonsensemedia.org/  and make an informed decision. Create lists, time slots, routine, and RULES!

Break that habit of instant gratification built-into app retention.

11/N
There's a whole new generation growing up that have some level of screen addition and digital anxiety like no other generation before them.

On the flip side, I'm part of a generation passionate about climate change thanks to Earth Day/Week and Captain Planet.

12/N
Ever wonder why people click on ads that are so obviously fake and sketchy? Add low self-esteem, misplaced trust, and ease of online transactions to a list of probable causes.

Before that happened, we had recurring stories of kids in-app purchases.

13/N
Search was never constrained to search engines. It is the means to learn/do something. With early exposure to voice assistants (built in IOT) and apps with search functions, kids getting wired earlier than ever.

Search behavior has evolved, and the data is lagging.

I've been thinking about the issue of "trust" thanks to @darth_na which deserves its own rant at some point. He's kind of got his own thread going: https://twitter.com/darth_na/status/1350113880807256067 and it dawned on me how my kids "trusted" Google.
