one thing i love about jjk is how akutami just. skips all of the leveling up/training montages. sure we got a glimpse of that with yuuji, but we just assume that all the sorcerers get stronger as time goes by (and we get to See their progression in battles rather than-
having to go through the process of justifying their strength). and then theres the whole beauty of having the strongest jujutsu sorcerer ever, gojo satoru, without belaboring a backstory on Why he’s so strong. he just is.
hes gojo satoru because hes strong and hes strong because hes gojo satoru. he was born with his strength and we never needed any justification.
and this glossing-over of development strength/technique wise really allows akutami to explore more interesting parts of the narrative!

like we don’t NEED to have chapters and chapters explaining how megumi got strong enough to pull off a domain expansion— the thing holding megumi back was himself: his insecurities, his self-confidence issues, constantly comparing himself to yuuji, etc.
likewise, with nanami, we get this really interesting glimpse into his past, but we don’t really need to think about his strength or anything. we know he’s strong already. sure his technique is super cool but the coolest thing about him is how different he is from most sorcerers.
yes theres beauty in watching characters get stronger and work hard for it. but that takes time. a lot of time to develop a plausible progression of their strength. akutami just said fuck it, made strong characters, and chose to focus on their motives/personalities. which i ADORE
like. jjk only has ~140 chapters out, yet theres so much depth and complexity to the story rn? and its all cohesive and compelling. god its amazing. (not to mention how insanely good and self-contained the prologues were despite literally being 4 chapters
)

AND AND AND this is more of a personal thing i guess but, the way that akutami just Sprinkled in satosugu’s tragic backstory in shibuya arc. like ik that was a consequence of the prologues— he wrote the prologues first and already showed the audience that gojo killed getou but-
he doesn’t ever try to fill in the gaps where he doesnt need to? akutami isnt heavy handed at all with these things— he just lets the readers fill in the gaps themselves.
like getou’s descent into madness? amazing, and akutami technically only used like 2-3 chapters for it.

we KNOW how horrible and traumatic plasma star vessel was for getou and gojou; akutami doesnt need to hammer the point home. getou’s spiraling is already justified, and the fact that gojou’s only response to the whole thing was to go numb and move on—
really makes it clear what sort of person gojou is (horrible at empathizing, egocentric, and a terrible terrible friend) without ever explicitly commenting on it.
jjk is “show don’t tell” at its best, tbh.
