Thread A two-months-long investigation by myself and @iamgmcnaughton found hundreds of cargo shipments of goods made from companies accused of using #Uighurforcedlabour have come into Canada since 2018. https://www.thestar.com/news/investigations/2021/01/22/was-your-fridge-made-with-forced-labour-these-canadian-companies-are-importing-goods-from-chinese-factories-accused-of-serious-human-rights-abuses.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
Using software that tracks shipments from factory to customer via bills of lading and cross referencing them with a U.S. government sanctions list of Chinese companies accused of using forced labour we found a nearly combined 800 shipments in containers.
The thing is though, this is merely a glimpse of how much merchandise is coming to Canada from such companies. Why? Because Canadian import data is not publicly available. These 800 shipments are only known about because they passed through the United States.
The number of shipments coming into Canada directly from China is still not known. Meanwhile concerns about forced labour of Uighurs in China is ramping up, with the U.S. calling the treatment of Uighurs there Genocide on the last day of the Trump administration.
