I actually think this vigilance can be a very good quality. It accounts for many of the valuable features of America. But we have to recognize that it can also be one of our worst qualities, and the enemy of thinking carefully.
Slippery slopes are real. But you can also die at the summit of a mountain. Genuine, thoughtful vigilance looks at every manner of threat to a free and flourishing democracy, not just one kind. And seeks to balance them.
The only thing I know for sure is that we have on our hands a new problem that the old frameworks don't fit. I will keep raising questions, as I did this morning, because that is what I do. We are going to have to think hard and well on this.
