I truly had high hopes for this country. I am struggling to maintain optimism that we’ll break through some of this bush mentality and see the light of day.

But my grasp on that tiny bit of hope is tenuous, at best.
We spent so long inching in the right direction, only to have it all come crashing down in less than 6 days because some egos were bruised.
This tactic of hoisting elephant guns to kill pesky mosquitoes is how we reverse 30 years of “steady progress” in less than 6 days instead of leveraging the power of technology to super charge the economy
Imagine Idi Amin ordering all forests burnt to the grown so there wouldn’t be any newspapers for people to read unfavorable things about his regime.
That’s where we are. Burning down our one viable economic engine. We were to skip the industrial revolution, straight to the knowledge economy. We seem bent on taking the fastest short cut backwards to the Stone Age.
Who will invest in this economy & environment of impunity and lack of civil liberties and rule of law? What for? I worked hard and earned investors who took a chance on us. So many amazing ideas and entrepreneurs are on the cusp of being starved out, with no investor confidence.
I’ve loved this country since before I left it at 12. I came back because I see so much potential here. But now, I am saddened to see many who I’ve admired start to give up and look elsewhere. The exodus has began. Our best and brightest are going to leave.
I am not being hyperbolic here. The answer to how do nations fail is evident: gradually, then suddenly. One tent pole of innovation (that hundreds of youth look up to) leaving, will inspire a brain drain. Then, who will be left?
We were doing so well. We weren’t perfect and no nation ever is. But my people are hustlers: every day, carving out an existence against the odds. Falling, getting up, rubbing off the dirt and trying again.
But I am tired, fam. It’s exhausting arguing with dead trees and trying to hoist Common Sense at the Public Square when the powers that be are drunk on indifference to the struggles of their people.
The internet has offered so many brilliant minds the opportunity to stand out in an economy that doesn’t generate any jobs. We’re 78% under 30. We graduate into a void of joblessness cause there no jobs to be had. If ur connected, you can at least be visible, find a niche, earn.
Take all that away, and we have several generations, whose futures are now in doubt. Every day we don’t keep pace with the world, we slide further behind: begging a world that’s busy with its own problems, to help us, always.
I am tired of working tirelessly to help my people thrive, only to forced to go to sleep every night with a headache because I’ve been banging my head against incompetence all day.
I have a love for this country that some have called irrational. But I believe in us, #256. I really do. We could be great, if we wanted it badly enough to believe in ourselves to step out of our comfort zone… and thrive.
To all of us struggling to make a difference, I salute you. I don’t have any answers for you on how we get through this, but find a way and survive. There will be a tomorrow. I don’t know when, but it’ll come. And you’ll be needed.
