Yesterday's NHS data shows that 59% of over 80s have had 1st vaccine dose but there is huge variation across STPs. 85% of over 80s in Gloucestershire, which may be approaching a ceiling, have been vaccinated compared to 36% in Suffolk and North East Essex. Why this variation? 1/5
Some areas have more over 80s and perhaps practices here are taking longer to vaccinate this group? But those areas with more over 80s *haven’t* vaccinated a smaller share of them. So the variation does not seem to be driven by differences in demand. 2/5
STPs doing well with over 80s tend to be doing well with under 80s. There issues with both supply (some areas' total supply covering a smaller proportion of their over 80s), and capacity (practices in some areas are slower at getting through the supply they have). 3/5
There may be other factors - for example willingness to be vaccinated. Demand in some areas may be lower than in others e.g. areas with larger minority ethnic populations, who may be more vaccine-hesitant or less able to access. We do not yet have the data to unpick this. 4/5
