A family friend worked closely with former GG David Johnston. She described him as impeccably respectful to everyone, regardless of role or background. Not surprising, bcuz Johnston came with a distinguished leadership record, & wasn't picked to keep lib twitter giddy for 15 mins
When Johnston left his position, he didn't publish a peevish letter about his "sureness" (whatever that means), but rather a book of correspondence with ordinary Canadians he met during his professional life, as he sought to understand Canada. ...It once was the case that people were appointed to important positions by politicians on the basis of how they'd be judged years later. Now it's a question of how twitter reacts over 12-24 hours. David Johnston didnt come with any hash tags or follower count. Boring, right?...
In terms of social media's effect on governance, this may be a more pernicious effect than the hate speech & wing nuttery that gets the attention. next GG likely being Lib focus-grouped on basis of how next-day meme will read ... "In historic first, Trudeau picks first XYXY"...
Which isn't to say that GG's should look like David Johnston. Even conservatives need to admit that there's value in promoting diversity through prominent appointments. But you don't do anyone any favours by ignoring the warning bells bcuz you're looking for hearts & emojis
