Highbury West's new LTN is a smashing success! The reduction in peak morning vehicle traffic is astonishing. From 8-9:30 am, motor vehicle movements in the immediate vicinity of the Aubert Park/Highbury Hill crossroads, have fallen to < 1 a min. Cyclists now 48% of road journeys.
Local drivers can still reach their homes. Emergency vehicles can still pass through. But with less through-traffic, Highbury's streets are nicer & safer for pedestrians & cyclists. This was the horrific status-quo before - main roads empty, while the side streets were rammed!
There's still some way to go. At least 55% of remaining traffic appears to be rat-runners who have ignored the signs, ultimately having to turn back the way they came. On top of this, 15% of drivers simply ignore the filters. But this will cost drivers like this £130 each time!
For now this is to be expected, LTN's take about 3 months to bed in, which they will. Everyone at IslingtonBC who's made this happen - thank you! Keep going - polls show positive views on LTNs are three times higher than negative ones. More LTNs please :) https://www.theguardian.com/environment/bike-blog/2020/oct/22/despite-a-loud-opposing-minority-low-traffic-neighbourhoods-are-increasingly-popular
