Online teaching is still very much a work in progress, but three weeks in, I thought I would share some ideas of things that seem to be working for me and my students in the hope that they might be useful for others! Thread below...
1. Starting all lessons with this slide (adapted for each lesson) to try and get students into a routine for lesson starts. Students know they're in the right place, the document they will need, and have something to start thinking about that is then discussed as a starter.
2. Comments in the chat for students to 'like' have become really useful for checking that a) students are ready, and b) students that are in the call are engaged enough to like a comment (which generally seems to follow that they working too!)
3. Similarly at the end of my live input (usually around half an hour) I'll put a number of comments in the chat. Students that are confident can leave the call knowing they can re-join to ask for help if needed, those that need help can stick around for support.
@Mentimeter has been incredibly useful both for recapping knowledge at the start of lessons (lovely variety of uses for this) or for assessing student confidence.
We are trying to use existing resources as much as possible, adapted for remote learning. Students seem to find it easier having really clearly labelled tasks next to the relevant information, rather than all information followed by all tasks. (Story, Source, Scholarship here!)
We are also trying to find ways to replicate activities done in the classroom that are either simplified or scaled back a little in order to ensure clarity of expected work and that students can access.
