disclaimer: there is no right or wrong way to annotate, just do what you’re comfortable with! and i believe in doing what you want with your books (whether it be writing in them, tabbing them etc).
hopefully this helps any of you who are interested in annotating :)

next, i don’t annotate all my books. usually, i only annotate books which i have a strong feeling i’ll enjoy. and if i end up loving a book which i didn’t annotate, i’ll make sure to reread it in the future to annotate it!
first i’ll start off with why i annotate:
- mark out my fav/memorable parts of a book
- i can recap on important moments that happened in the first book, in preparation for a sequel
- allows me to go back and easily reread specific moments (w/o having to reread the entire book-

again, i do this when i miss my fav books)
- pen down my thoughts throughout
- i feel that it enhances the reading experience, and makes you really pay attention to what’s going on
- it’s fun + once you’re done with the book, it’s VERY satisfying to look at all the tabs HAHA

so, how to start?
i know it’s pretty scary to write in your books, i’ve been there! but you can slowly integrate into this process.
- start writing on post it notes and stick them in your book (so you’re not actually writing on the pages)
- just tab without writing/underlining

trust me with time and a little bit of courage, you’ll be able to start writing in your books! personally for me, i just jumped right in w/o thinking too much and it was the best decision ever :D
materials i use:
- coloured sticky tabs from daiso (these are the best, lots of colours and they’re easily removable)
- coloured juice pens (0.38/0.5)/mildliners (they don’t bleed into the pages and dry quickly)
*i have a pen for each colour of the tabs & a basic black pen too

my colour code:

*yes, i specifically use orange to distinguish moments for romantic relationships as i run out of pink tabs if i combine everything under pink!
*this is what works for me, go ahead and change up the colour code for what works for you!

how i annotate:
basically, i just underline (with the respective colours) moments/info etc in the book. if it’s significant enough for me to want to revisit it, i will then tab it. i DON’T tab every single thing i underline!!!! if i have any thoughts, i’ll pen it down in the-

respective coloured pen next to what i underlined. again, i don’t always have things to write down!
i use the black pen for moments where there’s no specific colour to be used, like if it’s just a thought i have.

that’s about it actually! sometimes if i’m reading my book elsewhere when i don’t have my annotating supplies with me, i’ll note down the page number in my phone and get home to annotate. i usually remember what it was that i wanted to annotate!
also another thing, when i get to a part where it’s really exciting, i don’t pause to annotate. i’d just keep reading and once i’m done with the chapter, i’ll then go back to annotate! be flexible with annotating and enjoy the process :D
if any of you have further questions about annotating, feel free to dm me or leave a reply and i’ll try my best to help! keep in mind i’m no expert but i’ve been doing this for more than a year i think? HAHA anyways enjoy annotating!!
if you’ve read up till here, i love you
