TW: Sexual assault.
Update on that survey that apparently found that huge numbers of people (a claimed 71% of 3,680 respondents) allegedly wanted to try out "sex scenes" from the movie Irreversible - famous for a 9-min brutal rape sequence, & violent assaults throughout... THREAD
The PR told me that the survey was conducted by giving respondents a set list of scenes to choose their "favourites" from. So people weren't spontaneously naming Irreversible. I asked WHO put that film in as a suggestion, & WHY? To provoke controversy? No answer.
I haven't got info on how the scene was described to respondents either, as I don't believe that many people would even have seen a movie critics walked out on. The survey itself was VERY unclear what scene it was even referring to: "The Beginning Scene" was listed, but then...
...the PR told me "they meant the part where characters kiss through a shower curtain". A comparatively minor part of a movie infamous for its sexual violence. I wonder if those quizzed might simply have been asked something like "Would you like to try shower sex?"
I think the whole thing is fishy & hugely irresponsible. So I'm counting it as a moral win for me that my editor has allowed me to talk about the library clip in Atonement instead. The main point of my article is to inspire healthy, exciting ideas for sex - not normalise violence
Rape fantasies aren't uncommon, but need to be spoken about & explored with extreme care & caution. 100 words in a lite piece would have been inappropriate. And I'm well aware a lot of PR surveys aren't thoroughly academically sound - I worry about that less when they...
...just act to kick off interesting, playful & constructive conversations & are interpreted with a wise amount of salt. But making out that a violent rape film is the UK's 10th most inspirational "sexy flick" is a billion miles from OK.
I'm late filing my copy now & my editor is probably aggravated with me; WORTH IT.

I work within an imperfect media landscape but I have my lines and my values. I'm not endorsing this shit.
