THREAD. 1/ Even with the temporary £20 uplift, we have one of the least generous welfare systems in the developed world. Cutting UC at any point would be a mistake, let alone in the middle of a jobs crisis. @BenChu_ @ChrisGiles_ @RJPartington @lizzzburden
2/ To #KeepTheUplift is an important first step towards repairing our inadequate welfare system, though we should go further still as we argued in our paper with the @TUC, A Family Stimulus: https://www.ippr.org/research/publications/a-family-stimulus
3/ This is about both poverty reduction and supporting the economic recovery, as workers spend £££ which circulates through the wider economy, boosting GDP. The @OECD has recently called for the beefing up of “automatic stabalisers” to support future recoveries.
4/ Furthermore, latest data suggests over 2 million remain on out of work legacy benefits who are missing out from increases. If creaking IT cannot deliver this, claimants must be supported to transition to UC where they can with relevant transitional protection.
