Why don't organisations #ShowTheSalary? A short thread.
Here are some of the reasons organisations have given us for not being able to #ShowTheSalary over the past few months.

"COVID has led to new challenges related to salary disclosure".
We have no idea what this means...oh wait, it means absolutely nothing.

"Roles are funded by partners and they have asked us to follow their approach to not advertise the salary"
Did you ask them to follow your approach and stand over why it's important? No? Ok, then you're not actually trying. 2/

"We had to recruit urgently and didn't have time to benchmark".
So you recruited people without knowing what you'd pay them or how they'd fit into your existing team structures? And this urgent need has repeated numerous times? You need to get better at planning. 3/

"We don't want to put off higher earners who we'd pay above market rate for"
Oh, you should've just said. You don't care about internal pay disparity/actually paying people fairly for the role. Instead, you'll ensure those who are over-paid for their work remain that way. 4/

Interestingly, after those excuses we really don't have much else. The vast majority respond with silence. They ignore us entirely, even when we're acting after messages from their own staff or potential candidates.
But we've figured out what it really boils down to

But we've figured out what it really boils down to

Around 160 orgs have now signed our #ShowTheSalary pledge. How do they possibly do it with all these barriers on the way? Oh, it's because they actually care about pay equity.
They're living their values and therefore it's a straightforward decision. There's nothing... 6/

...complicated about it. If you believe it's important for your staff to be paid fairly for the work they do. And if you don't want to perpetuate wage gaps in our sector. Then you #ShowTheSalary every time you recruit and that's the end of it. 7/7
