Imagine the look on a therapist’s face if the opening words from a client were ‘Is there coherence between the theories you espouse and how you live your outside-clinic life? If I was the same troubled person and we were in a different social context, how would you judge me?’.
Or, if the client said ‘how much do you know about the philosophy that was in your training curriculum?’ Or ‘by what moral right, or rights, do you presume to be able to help me?’. Or ‘do you really *care* for *me*?’.
Or, ‘when you say you have a caring essence that cuts across all social contexts, is there a possibility that you are simply uncritically fitting yourself into a normative therapeutic discourse that’s more about fronstage ideology than reality?’
Or ‘as a person-centred therapist, do you have judgemental intrusive thoughts, fantasies... do you dream judgementally?’ ‘Were you essentially non-judgemental and caring before you started your training, or were you socialised into a virtuous language game?’.
‘If I spat in your beer/g&t/wine, would you still care for me at that moment?’ (hats off to Laing for that one)
