after watching metropolis i have a whole new appreciation of the paparazzi vid and the amount of thought put into the artistic references gaga chooses for her music videos (thread)
i literally just got done watching this movie for the first time and it got me thinking so dont yell at me if my interpretation is off đź’–
metropolis is very critical of capitalism. it's about a dystopian future affected by EXTREME class separation where the poor live underground and operate machinery to keep the upper world running.
a dead woman is resurrected in the form of a cyborg. the cyborg is given the appearance/identity of an underground activist. she is a darker, corrupt version of the real woman.
the cyborg nearly dismantles society. she uses the woman's beauty to manipulate upper class men into turning on each other and convinces the poor to destroy their own homes.
the poor eventually realize that they've been tricked and destroy the cyborg.
in paparazzi gaga is thrown off a balcony and killed. her death scene mimics one of marilyn monroe's very last photoshoots. gaga's attributed marilyn to inspiring the song so this is pretty cool.
gaga comes back as a robot or cyborg of some sort. she returns to her mansion and eventually becomes a darker, more sexual version of her former self. people begin to die in the mansion.
the new gaga finishes off the mansion by killing her boyfriend and then goes on to take control of the media, eventually getting caught and ending up in jail.
i just found this super interesting! every music video of hers with a film reference is actually deeply thought out and its fascinating how many layers there are.
i forgot an important piece but i dont feel like redoing the whole thread LMAO the cyborg was specifically given that identity so it could be used as classist propaganda. it's probably easy to guess that but i just thought i'd add it in.
