I’m teaching an online asynchronous CW class this term. Told them to create a weekly schedule with all classes, their jobs, time for what matters to them. I didn’t necessarily say, Clearly mark WHEN you will work on my class. So: many did not. Very illuminating.
What they did: their f2f and synchronous classes have a specific time block. Same with jobs, church, gym, standing meetings. But asynchronous classes were grouped into general homework time, listed as “other.” One didn’t mention my class at all, only what he HAD to show up for.
The beauty of asynchronous classes is their flexibility, but we can’t expect students to know how to set an *internal* prioritization. We have to show them, change mindsets. Teaching them how to make time for my class is like teaching them to make time for their writing. Forever.
If we could show students how to make time, structure their own days more effectively, fewer faculty would have to teach f2f and hybrid classes and we could all stay safer and not get Covid?
