The approximate size of various ocean animals with a Bernie for scale. A Thread. 🧵
The largest deep-sea hydrothermal vent tubeworms are approximately THREE BERNIES tall. With these tubeworms from @edyong209's video being slightly smaller than the maximum Burnies measured, at roughly two Bernies total length.

Even though they start life no bigger than a small seed, the giant ocean sunfish (Mola mola) can eventually grow to 3.3 Bernies long!
Giant ocean isopods (aka ocean rolly pollies) can reach up to 1/2 a Bernie. Talk about a pillbug!
Here is a Bernie for scale among the "Forest of the Weird," a reef of deep-sea carnivorous sponges.

This giant deep-sea jelly, know as a siphonophore, is roughly THIRTY BERNIES long!!
This amazing animal was filmed by @SchmidtOcean, with info of these "curtains of death*" here: https://twitter.com/RebeccaRHelm/status/1247238896766914567
*No touching recommended for Real Bernies.
And finally, the world's heaviest jellyfish can weigh as much as a washing machine and be up to 2 Bernies wide! Ships unlucky enough to catch these jellies in their nets are even at risk for sinking!

In conclusion, the Bernie Unit is a useful sizing tool, however, real Bernies should not be used unless waterproof mittens are provided. [end of thread]
P.S. the big crab is a Japanese Spider Crab. The crab picture below was nearly 80 years old when this photo was taken. About as old as Bernie!
