I wrote a letter of rec for a friend today. Super happy to do it. Good friend. Good writer. Then I saw people complaining about dramaturgs being gatekeepers again. And. Well. A story.
A few years ago, I fought so hard I cried in public on more than one occasion and tried every argument with my AD to try to get a play programmed.
Didn’t work.
The writer was super upset, and I think blamed me. I was very upset, but I was told not to talk. So, the writer still doesn’t know about the crying and the arguing.
The play became a pretty big deal, but by the time I could get an I told you so in, that AD was moving on and didn’t really want to deal with me. Because, well. Crying and arguing.
I’ve wondered how many playwrights don’t know or care about the crying and arguing dramaturgs do. Blame the ADs if you must blame anyone.
Never not going to be mad.
