If the Rangers were to trade for Dubois, it’s unofficially closing door on Zibanejad long term based on numbers that have been rumored. So ask yourself, of all the potential options, do you want PLD to be the one that replaces Zibanejad? Because PLD is at $5M now.
The math is tough. And the team has a lot of work to do at center in general, independent of whether or not Zibanejad is here after current contract.
If the Rangers weren’t so loaded on the wings, you could probably keep Zibanejad and have him on wing, as Lightning have done with Stamkos, and Flyers have done Giroux.
In a way this is a manifestation of Andersson being picked at 7, and Chytil not being given much of a chance. Ideally they would have dealt Strome at peak in a Brassard like trade.
Fox is at $925K for two more years, not a stretch to say he could be a $4M player at a minimum.
Shesterkin has one year left, he could get a good bump, or the team hedges bet with an in between deal.
Buch, currently the only proven NHL RW, needs a new deal.

The defense needs NHL bodies, can't count on all the kids to be what they need.
So there's a lot of things going on simultaneously which make it difficult. Selling high on TDA, Strome could have made things a little easier.
