serious melee volleyball thread (as serious as melee volleyball can be)
first of course big ups to my teammate @GG_SSBM and our opponents @HoorayForJay and @23Random23, but also big ups to @Eon_TAS @panjournalist and @ImplixSSB our practice partners. they came up with a lot of the strats we used in the tournament and helped us develop them.
melee volleyball is incredibly sick and there's so much to be explored and learned. i know our play probably looked cheesy or lame but i hope you can look at our opponents' play and see the potential of this mode. we learned new things every game
singles vs doubles: i think there is room for both. perhaps people will discover setups that are just too difficult for a single player to deal with, or perhaps doubles players will get too good at defense, but those are worries for another time. both are good ^_^
rules: before the tournament we were finding all sorts of strategies that made us say "this should be banned" but we learned to deal with them one by one. you can see the adaptations both teams had to make in grand finals.
so i think in terms of ruleset for now we should be permissive. i see some rulesets banning "OP serves" like rest or falcon punch, people were discussing disabling player damage to prevent our marth boxing strat, i don't think it's necessary yet.
these things aren't unbeatable and while they might not mesh with what volleyball "should" be i think it's interesting for characters to have these very specialised roles. no one else can do what marth or puff or peach or falco do and that's a good thing. that's valuable.
characters: i haven't played enough doubles teams to make a tier list but puff/marth, falco/puff, and falco/sheik, are the best teams i've seen. falcon is a great all-rounder but specialising seems the way to go right now, peach is interesting but i haven't seen her enough yet
ness, GnW, mewtwo, and ICs, are underrated and need exploration. for example ness forward air is a multi hit meaning it beats everything up at the net, his nair lingers, and his back air is strong, and he has decent speed. not S tier but i think definitely viable
tournament: the tournament was a whole lot of fun. in a funny bit of seeding luck we got to play the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place teams in a row. i really hope the teams stick with it and we can get to play again. i would love to do this every week.
if the rules change i imagine it's going to hit gg and i the hardest, there were a lot of people playing good honest volleyball. but i don't think we won through gimmicks, and we plan to keep winning even if the rules do change. anyone who thinks otherwise can play our falcos :3
