Roe is not enough

Roe was the beginning, not the end of the fight for reproductive freedom. While it is critical that we fight to make sure abortion remains legal, preserving Roe does not mean everyone who needs abortion care can access it.

Locking Roe into state and federal law is only a starting point, not the end game of our mission. A right is not a right without access. #ReimagineRoe 2/11
For decades, cis white middle to upper-income women have been able to get abortion care. We need to fight to make sure abortion care is available for all, not just those who can afford it and have resources and privilege. #ReimagineRoe 3/11
Due to inequities in our country, people of color disproportionately make up the majority of Medicaid enrollees. The make-up of female patients by race/ethnicity is 30% of Black women, 26% of Hispanic women, and 15% of white women. #ReimagineRoe 4/11

Passed in 1976, the Hyde Amendment blocks Medicaid and any federal funding of abortion care. There are a few exceptions: when the pregnant patient’s life is at risk or when the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest. #ReimagineRoe 5/11
This means that patients cannot get abortion care even when a doctor recommends it and the patient’s health is at risk. #ReimagineRoe 6/11
For example, an ectopic pregnancy is when a pregnancy develops outside of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies are very dangerous and always result in an abortion or otherwise risk the patient’s life. If delayed the necessary care, this can leave the patient infertile. 7/11
Medicaid should be able to cover this, but the Hyde Amendment prohibits this, leaving Medicaid patients disproportionately affected. #ReimagineRoe #BeBoldEndHyde 8/11
Indian Health Services is funded by the Federal Government therefore, Indigenous patients are without abortion coverage nationwide. #ReimagineRoe #BeBoldEndHyde 9/11
Additionally, Veterans and those seeking care from federally funded Family Planning Title X programs are also unable to get abortion coverage. #ReimagineRoe #BeBoldEndHyde 10/11
