NRG is out here spreading bridge fuel propaganda at this public hearing on the proposed fracked gas plant in Astoria 🙄

Watch them lie live here:

NRG shill Tom Atkins accidentally admitted "any fossil fuel burning is unacceptable" 😂
NRG: "Natural gas reduces so many emissions!" (When compared to literal kerosene)

Solar and wind are already cheaper than fracked gas.

There is no reason to build any more fossil fuel infrastructure ever again, and they know it.
. @shaygabriel points out that Con Ed's new transmission project would eliminate need for any new fossil fuel infrastructure.

NRG admits that it will meet the energy need in Astoria, but not the "bulk need" (which could be met a million other ways with renewables!)
"This project doesn't release the chokehold from our neck, it just loosens it a little. We're still being choked.

You're giving us a false choice between keeping the lights on and renewable energy. We know we can have both. 🔥

Why won't NRG build renewables instead?" -Sebastian
"Battery storage and utility scale solar and wind can ramp up almost instantly, while your fracked gas plants take 30 mins to power up.

Why do you want to build the slower, lower capacity, less efficient, dirtier, and more expensive option?" - @tiffany_caban ⚡✊
Someone points out that NRG is claiming they'll comply with the CLCPA by running this plant on "green" hydrogen instead of gas in the future, but they didn't include any infrastructure plans for green hydrogen.

Rep says they'll either run on green hydrogen or shut down by 2040
Green hydrogen is a new myth being peddled by the fossil fuel industry so they can claim that *one day,* these plants will be zero emissions.

It's a lie.

"Why is NRG pursuing fossil fuel infrastructure in our community when we have an opportunity for renewables?

You claim the plant will run less than 5% of the time, but you're spending an awful lot of money for it.

The numbers don't match up!" - @Costa4NY 👏👏👏
This plant costs $350M.

NRG admits that if they have to shut it down in the next 5 years, they will lose a ton of money.

Let's make sure they lose a ton of money.
NRG rep says they had to cut power in the middle of wildfires and a heatwave in CA because they didn't have enough gas plants, as a cautionary tale. 🙄

No, they cut power because they had a terrible investor-owned utility that put profits over basic maintenance and safety!
"This plant will only create 10-20 permanent jobs. Meanwhile, offshore wind would create tens of thousands of jobs.

You claim the plant will reduce emissions by 99%, but the trust is that's only for one type of pollution - other types will only fall 30%." - Charlie
"NRG claims we have to choose between the current kerosene plant or building a new one, but that's not true.

You legally have to shut down the current plant, so you're presenting a fake choice. 💯

You say we need peaker plants to meet demand, but Con Ed found that we don't."
"NRG says renewables are impossible at this site, but it didn't event consider renewables in your plan.

You said your poll shows NYers want this plant, but the poll made them choose between the plant and no power."

NRG rep says he'll address his concerns offline 😂
"NRG said the hour duration of battery storage us only 4 hours and that's a lie, we have 14-18 hour batteries.

You said that wind and solar aren't reliable and that's a lie, you know operators look at weather, de-rate these things, and overbuild." - Eric
"You claimed that CA had blackouts because they didn't have enough gas plants, but it was really because it was too hot and developers didn't take climate change into account - which is what your own company is fueling!"
"You said this investment is risky because you may need to shut the plant down in 5 years.

Instead of making a risky investment which poisons people, invest in the renewables we will inevitably need!" - Eric 🔥🔥🔥
There were 238 people on this call, and NRG is too afraid to turn on the cameras and show how many people oppose this plant.

They claim it's not possible to have that many people on a Zoom call 🙄

DSA has done it before, we'll show you how 💻
"You mentioned that safety was NRG's top goal.

You affirmed the need to follow up with people in a more comprehensive manner.

Will you commit to not moving forward with this project until we've all been vaccinated and can have a real public hearing?" - @brooklyn_darren

Nope!
"The IPCC report says we have until 2030 to get off fossil fuels, but you stated the target to close this plant is 2040.

How do you reconcile those facts?" - @joestanton

THIS MF REALLY SAID HE'S NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE IPCC REPORT 🤬
