So. @uniofleicester's managers will cut medieval literature and English lang because they want "to offer a suite of undergrad degrees that provide modules which students expect of an English degree". How misguided. Students find what they love from the range that's provided /1
The @uniofleicester is actually REDUCING choice & patronisingly preempting what students "expect". But wait! They'll cut medieval & early modern, & yet offer "a chronological literary history". Taught by whom? How utterly insulting to professionals in their specialist areas /2
This university, my former stamping ground, now wants to teach "a range of modules which are excitingly innovative and thematically driven". Because teaching courses on sexuality in Early English, or medievalisms, Viking myths, sin & redemption, are not innovative or thematic? /3
Pre-modernists: pay attention to apparent reasons given for proposed redundancies @uniofleicester. The value of early literature & the high-level skill of professional medievalists is fully ignored. Friends: "There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action" (Goethe) /4
