a point that doesn't really get brought up that often in the defund the police discourse is that the average american, with a little money, can very easily arm themselves with an entire SWAT team's worth of deadly weaponry.
it doesn't change how i feel about it, but i think it's a part of the discussion — it's going to be hard to defund and reform the police without disarming the citizenry.
note: from a moral standpoint, we really need to do something about the raging gun fever this country has and from a political standpoint, it would be fucking suicidal to try this right now and would consume everything and accomplish nothing
of course, the main problem is still that the police are killing unarmed black people, but i understand how the arms race between police and the people has influenced their approach to weaponization
