New case report just published in the American Journal of Hematology of severe thrombocytopenia within days following #COVID19 vaccination.

The history is very similar to the report of the physician who died following #COVID19 vaccination as platelets <5k (normal 150-400k) day +3.
Patient responded to ITP treatment with steroids and IVIG and is doing well.
Of note, pt had viral illness ~2 mo earlier...

Interestingly, ITP following vaccination (most commonly seen in kids post MMR, and still rare) typically is less severe than non-vaccine related ITP & usually develops w/in 6 weeks.

Drug induced thrombocytopenia is another consideration but typically takes ~7 days when in response to a new drug although it can appear sooner with re-exposure. It is unclear in this case if this was the 1st or 2nd dose.

The timing of this & the other case don't seem entirely consistent w/ ITP 2/2 vaccine to me & causation is unknown.
As ITP can be seen after other vaccines & vaccine related ITP is typically responsive to treatment, I encourage you all to be vaccinated (when offered!)...

And to always seek medical care for any new bruising or bleeding symptoms (increased or easy bruising, small red dots (petechiae) on your skin, nose bleeds, etc).
