On this day in 1917 the much delayed All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final of 1916 was played at @CrokePark between @TipperaryGAA and @KilkennyCLG in front of a crowd of 5,000 spectators, the small crowd was to be blamed on travel restrictions in place at the time
The 1916 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final had originally been fixed for the 3rd of December 1916 but the @officialgaa could not secure special trains from the railway companies to transport fans it was decided to postpone the match #corkhurlinghistory
The match had a very early throw in time of 12 noon but the match got underway at 12:15 and the game was 15 minutes old before @TipperaryGAA captain Johnny Leahy of @BoherlahanDGAA broke the deadlock with a pointed free

There were then two players dismissed by the match referee Mr. Willie Walsh from @WaterfordGAA, the offending players were Dick Grace of @KilkennyCLG and Tommy Shanahan of @TipperaryGAA and shortly after Mick Kennedy goaled for @KilkennyCLG #corkhurlinghistory
The Premier County replied with a goal from Jimmy Murphy and this was quickly followed by a further goal for @TipperaryGAA scored by @thurlessars Hugh Shelly and then Dick Walsh pointed, before Hugh Shelly goaled off a 70’ taken by Johnny Leahy #corkhurlinghistory
Hugh Shelly of @thurlessars then completed his hat trick of goals seal a famous victory and a ninth title for @TipperaryGAA on a final score line of 5-04 to 3-02 for @KilkennyCLG. The match referee was Mr. Willie Walsh of @WaterfordGAA #corkhurlinghistory
