The best lesson I ever learned in life came from a rabbi in my hometown, @CharlestonRabbi. It's been one of my guiding principles for over a decade, and I think society would be a better place if more people lived by it too. 1/
It was part of an interfaith panel between him, the priest at the local Catholic church, and the imam at the local Islamic center. The conversation was about faith and tolerance (context: this was at the height of the War on Terror/War in Iraq). 2/
Rabbi Urecki was asked by someone in the audience what they key to tolerance and acceptance was. He sat for just a moment and then answered "Doubt. Never underestimate the importance of doubting the sureness of your beliefs." 3/
His theory was that doubting yourself was a virtue in and of itself. A lack of certainty that you are right and others are wrong closes the mind to new ideas and perspectives. 4/
By being open to new ideas, a person embodies the values that lead inherently to tolerance and acceptance. One of my resolutions this year is to reaffirm my commitment to that principle. I hope that you do as well. /End
