I’ve been thinking a lot abt S5E8 of The Expanse. Naomi Nagata’s struggle in the episode is the most perfect symbol for the terrifying vulnerability in the hours and days directly after leaving a violently abusive relationship. I never thought to see that in sf tv ... 1/n
... the sensation of being on the absolute fuqin edge, of it all maybe blowing up in your face, even to the point that your friends can’t come too close for the danger, the fact your own words are used against you by your abuser ...2/n
... and used in a way to try and make those who want to help get hurt instead, the absolute painful struggle to *even* *be* *heard*, so that you’re reduced to repeating a cut-down version of what your abuser wants you to say ... 3/n
... the suffocating effort to get your own words out, and the physical pain, ... all of this i’d buried deep down and then this ep showed it with complete profound respect. Not ‘strong woman’ bs - no. The painful, uncertain, terrifying psychological struggle. 4/n
Dominique Tipper’s performance touched me deep. And it made me ashamed bc I’d found the previous ep corny and hard to relate to. Why all that effort to tell her son she loved him? Ah .. yeah ... ofc ... even me, I’ve swallowed that misogynistic junk 5/n
so that I wasn’t taking Naomi seriously. But she was right beyond right with every word she said to her son in S5E7. I should have listened more carefully.
